How to Find a Sober Coach or Mentor

For those that suffer from substance use disorder, utilizing the services of a sober coach can be life changing. A sober coach (also known as a recovery Mentor) is traditionally someone hired by the person of concern, their family, or a friend, to help determine the best course of action to help the person of concern achieve and maintain sobriety. There are many sober coaches who work in a variety of different disciplines, so it is recommended that anyone looking to hire a recovery coach do some research ahead of time.

Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Sober Coach or Mentor

1.     Is the sober coach or recovery mentor local to my area?

2.     What is their communication style? Is that a style my family or my person of concern can cope with?

3.     How often will my sober coach or mentor meet with my person of concern?

4.     How often will I receive communication from my recovery coach?

5.     How long has the sober coach been in business? What do their previous clients say?

6.     How are services billed and what is the rate you will be paying?

Knowing the answers to these questions prior to the start of services can eliminate a lot of potential for confusion or misunderstandings. Sober coaches are often in recovery themselves and many will attempt to provide the answers to these questions before they are asked.
