National Recovery Month: Celebrating Hope, Healing & the Power of Recovery
Every person. Every family. Every community. Recovery is possible — and we walk with you every step of the way.
September is National Recovery Month, a time set aside each year to raise awareness of mental health and substance use disorders, celebrate the millions of people living in recovery, and honor the families, professionals, and communities who make healing possible. We also recognize those still struggling to recover.
National Recovery Month began in 1989 under the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Originally launched as “Treatment Works! Month,” it started as a way to recognize the dedicated professionals working in addiction treatment. Over time it grew: in 1998 the focus expanded to celebrate individuals in recovery themselves, and by 2011 it became National Recovery Month to embrace the full spectrum of behavioral health. Its core message has never changed — prevention works, treatment is effective, and people can and do recover.
In California, this national observance holds special meaning. Every September since 1992, the California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Professionals (CCAPP) has sponsored National Recovery Month events at the State Capitol. These gatherings bring thousands together to increase public understanding of mental health and substance use disorders while celebrating those who recover and become living examples of hope for others.
The official color of National Recovery Month is purple, and the purple ribbon has become a powerful symbol of resilience, compassion, and the recovery movement. Wearing or displaying the purple ribbon signals solidarity with people in recovery and a commitment to ending stigma.
Why It Matters
Stigma still keeps too many people from seeking help. National Recovery Month shines a light on real stories of transformation, reminds families that they are not alone, and reinforces that recovery is not only possible — it is happening every day. It acknowledges the courage of those who choose healing and the strength of the support systems that surround them.
How Recovery Allies Lives This Ethos
At Recovery Allies, the spirit of National Recovery Month is woven into everything we do. Our mission is to engage fractured family systems through several disciplines that uncover and promote wellness for long-term resilience. We believe every individual and every family has a unique story and unique needs — there is no one-size-fits-all approach.
Founded in 2011, Recovery Allies provides compassionate, invitational and adaptive interventions to fit the family’s needs, case management, sober and mental health mentoring, safe passage transport, recovery companion services, treatment planning, and family support. We meet people where they are, with kindness, accountability, and unwavering belief in their capacity to heal. Whether someone is taking the first step toward treatment or building a sustainable life in recovery, we guide them — and their families — every step of the way.
This September, and every month of the year, we stand with the recovery community. We celebrate those who have found freedom, support those still seeking it, and walk beside the families who love them.
Wear the purple ribbon. Share a story of hope. Reach out if you or a loved one needs support.
Recovery is real. Recovery is possible. You do not have to walk this path alone.
